Nikon AF-S 58mm f/1.4 G
Nikon's AF-S 58mm f-1.4 G lens costs around 1780 euros and shows off its bright f/1.4 at maximum aperture, silent focusing coatings and Nano crystals to reduce ghosting and flare. The 58mm focal length is reminiscent of the old Noct Nikkor, designed specifically for shooting in low light conditions, with a maximum aperture of f/1.2. the lens has an aspherical design which minimizes flare towards the edge of the frame, a typical feature of fast aperture lenses. Even though Nikon talks about a control over flare phenomena, the Noct wording is not shown on the lens and the maximum aperture is rather slow. The build quality of this lens is enough to justify its price compared to a standard 50mm. Among the most surprising things, however, is the size, actually large for an 85mm f/1.4. Despite its bulk, the weight remains at a reasonable 365 grams, thanks to the use of lightweight but high-quality plastic materials throughout much of the barrel. The autofocus is driven by a Silent Waves motor and the focusing speed is adequate for slow moving and static subjects, while it can be particularly difficult to focus on fast subjects. Manual variations can be applied at any time, thanks to the smooth and well-damped focusing ring, a feature that makes adjusting the MAF pleasant. The minimum focusing distance is 58cm and the front thread does not rotate, making this lens suitable for the use of polarized and graduated filters.
